Grinding Coffee BeansGrinding coffee is the standard terminology used when referring the process. However, to actually understand the process of grinding coffee beans you must know that the term "grinding" refers to a mechanical process that reduces something into smaller pieces. The working surface in grinding is normally a hard mineral, composite or diamond."Grinding" doesn’t have any control over the size of the particles being removed. Grinding would actually pulverize the coffee into coffee dust consisting of random sizes of particles. The random size of the coffee particles would cause brews to be extremely inconsistent. While the smaller particles, the coffee powder, would allow the brewing process to extract solids into the brew that are bitter. This is why gourmet coffee beans are never ground. Precision, hardened steel burrs are used for the coffee grinding process. Coffee beans should be machined or shaved into small particles of precisely the same size and shape for consistent brewing. The size of the coffee particle can be adjusted for different types of brewing processes or possibly to suit an individual's taste. For the coffee gourmet purest, ground coffee sifters are available. A coffee sifter is vertical stack of several sifter pans with each pan having a fine mesh, precision screen bottom that will only allow particles that are smaller than the screen mesh to fall through. The coarse sifters are at the top of the stack and the sifters get finer toward the bottom. The coffee dust falls out on the floor. Most coffee grinders in home use simply beat the coffee beans into particles that are, to some extent, relatively smaller than a bean. Some coffee connoisseurs have such finely developed taste or, possibly such finely developed imaginations, that they can tell you what sifter will brew the best coffee. The amazing thing is that they will be right 100% of the time. The coffee he chooses will be perfect, for his personal taste. Continue to Podding the Coffee
